SMITH TABLES MOTION OF CONGRATULATIONS TO FALKLAND

10.22.00am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 25th Sep 2007

Iain Smith, the MSP for North East Fife, has tabled a motion in the Scottish Parliament to mark Falkland's success in winning the Entente Florale Gold Award.

Falkland competed against 22,000 entrants from across Europe to win the award which is based not just on the quality of flora but on a broad range of social and environmental factors. These include community involvement, respect for the environment and education.

Mr Smith said: "I'm delighted that Falkland has won this award, especially as this year is the 20th Anniversary of the foundation of Falkland in Bloom.

"The award represents a great number of individuals working together successfully to improve the look of the village and, in so doing, strengthen the community and address issues of sustainability and bio-diversity. This is an excellent example of the kind of virtuous circle that can develop when local people unite to improve the life of their community"
