SMITH AND CAMPBELL CALL ON DRIVING STANDARDS TO RETHINK CUPAR DECISION

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 28th May 2008

North East Fife's Liberal Democrat Parliamentarians Sir Menzies Campbell MP and Iain Smith MSP have called on the Driving Standards Agency to rethink its decision to close Cupar's driving test centre.

Commenting on the DSA's announcement, Sir Menzies and Mr Smith said, "This doesn't make any sense. Cupar is very well suited to act as a base for North East Fife, whereas Kirkcaldy is well beyond the 20 mile traveling distance criteria set by the Driving Standards agency for many of our constituents, particularly from the East Neuk.

"Closing the test centre will seriously inconvenience our constituents who will have to travel further to take driving lessons and the test and therefore add to the cost of learning to drive.

"It would be far simpler, and better for the environment, for the Driving Test Examiner to come to Cupar rather than everyone else having to drive to Kirkcaldy?"
