SMITH WELCOMES CUPAR RAILWAY INVESTMENT BUT "DON'T FORGET ABOUT DISABLED ACCESS"

12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 5th Jun 2008

North East Fife's member of the Scottish Parliament Iain Smith has welcomed the news that Cupar is to benefit from £721,872 investment in railway car park expansion but has called on the Scottish Government for an update on the disabled access improvements for Cupar Station. The plan to add an extra 89 car park spaces should be complete by the summer.

Commenting, Iain Smith said, "This is good news for Cupar and good news for North East Fife. In order to increase public transport usage, the facilities must be attractive in order to wean people from their cars. This will make it more convenient for many people to travel by train from Cupar."

Mr Smith further noted, "Whilst this investment is welcome news, the overwhelming priority for Cupar railway station is the development of its disabled access facilities and I have written to the Minister for an update of the plans for this work."
