FISHING & FUEL COSTS - SMITH QUESTIONS CABINET SECRETARY

5.06.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 11th Jun 2008

In view of the serious impact rising fuel costs are having upon the fishing industry, Iain Smith MSP has written to Richard Lochhead, Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs & the Environment.

In his letter Mr Smith said, 'You will no doubt be fully aware of the hardships being faced by Scottish fishermen in light of rising fuel costs. The Scottish Fishermen's Federation are calling for short-term financial aid to see the industry through the current crisis and allow time for the industry to adapt to high fuel prices by means of the European de minimus principle.

I would be grateful if you were able to tell me of the representations you have made to the UK Government with regard to this matter.'
