SMITH ANGERED BY WITHDRAWAL OF WEST SANDS CASH

2.51.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 8th Jul 2008

North East Fife MSP, Iain Smith, has reacted angrily to reports that Scottish Enterprise has withdrawn funding for the West Sands Project in St Andrews.

Mr Smith warned SNP ministers in the autumn that, if they persisted with plans for the restructuring of Scottish Enterprise, then the interests of areas like North East Fife would become peripheral to those of the larger cities.

Scottish Enterprise has confirmed the funding has been withdrawn because the new Scottish Enterprise East has different priorities to those of the former Scottish Enterprise Fife.

Mr Smith said: "Tourism is key part of the economy in St Andrews and the West Sands project is essential to securing the future of the industry.

"I have tabled a motion in Scottish Parliament as well as writing directly to the Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Sustainable Growth, demanding that he intervene with Scottish Enterprise to ensure this project goes ahead.

"North East Fife can not afford to be sidelined by the arrogance of this SNP Government".
