SMITH AND CAMPBELL WELCOME LEVEN DIAGEO NEWS

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 9th Sep 2009

North East Fife's parliamentarians Iain Smith MSP, Convener of the Scottish Parliament's Economy Committee, and Sir Menzies Campbell MP have welcomed the proposed investment and creation of 400 new jobs in Leven by Diageo.

Commenting after the announcement that Diageo had rejected an alternative proposal from the Scottish Government's taskforce to instead invest in a new plant in Kilmarnock, Sir Menzies Campbell said, "While the loss of up to 900 jobs in Kilmarnock and Port Dundas is sad news, I welcome the proposed investment in up to 400 new jobs in Leven which will secure the future of the plant and the Cameron Bridge Distillery."

Iain Smith added, "This is a vote of confidence in the Leven workforce and Diageo can be assured of a skilled and professional workforce and the wholehearted backing of the local community."
